IELTS Writing Task 1

The line graph compares the number of shops that closed and opened in the UK from 2011 to 2018. It is clear that there was a significant gap between the two categories in the beginning of the period, which narrowed down gradually until they reached a balance in 2016. Afterwards, the trend reversed and the number of openings exceeded the number of closures by a large margin.

In 2011, there were about 9,000 shop closures, which was the highest figure for this category throughout the period. This number dropped sharply to around 6,000 in 2012 and then fluctuated slightly until 2015, when it reached a low point of about 3,000. However, it rose again to around 4,000 in 2018, which was still lower than the initial level.

On the other hand, the number of shop openings was at its lowest in 2011 with just over 2,000 new shops. This number increased dramatically to reach a peak of about 7,500 in both 2013 and 2015, after a brief decline. From 2015 onwards, there was a steep fall in the number of openings, which reached a level of about 4,000 in 2016, matching the number of closures. However, it bounced back to around 5,500 in 2018, creating a positive gap between the two categories.

In summary, the line graph shows that the number of shop closures and openings in the UK experienced significant variations over the period, with a notable shift from a negative to a positive balance in the retail sector.

The line graph illustrates the changes in the number of shops that closed and opened in the UK between 2011 and 2018. It is evident that both categories showed considerable fluctuations over the period, with a remarkable change in the relationship between them from a negative to a positive one.

In 2011, there were nearly 9,000 shop closures, which was the maximum value for this category in the whole period. This value decreased rapidly to around 6,000 in 2012 and then rose slightly to nearly 7,500 in 2013. From then on, there was a general downward trend in the number of closures, reaching its minimum at about 3,000 in 2015. However, it increased marginally to around 4,000 by the end of the period.

Conversely, the number of shop openings was at its minimum in 2011 with just above 2,000 new shops. This number rose sharply to reach a high point of about 7,500 in both 2013 and 2015, after a minor drop. Thereafter, it plummeted to roughly equal the number of closures in 2016, but surpassed it significantly in 2018, reaching almost 5,500.

In summary, the line graph demonstrates that the number of shop closures and openings in the UK varied considerably over the period, with a notable improvement in the retail sector towards the end of the period.
