IELTS Writing Task 1

The pie charts compare the population distribution by age groups in Yemen and Italy in 2000 and 2050. It is clear that both countries will experience significant demographic changes over the 50-year period, with Yemen becoming older and Italy becoming much older.

In 2000, Yemen had a very young population, with half of its people under 14 years old. The proportion of working-age people (15-59) was 46.3%, while only 3.6% of the population was over 60 years old. By contrast, Italy had a much older population, with only 24.1% of its people under 14 years old. The majority of the population (61.6%) was in the working-age group, while 14.4% of the people were over 60 years old.

By 2050, both countries will see a decline in the percentage of young people and an increase in the percentage of older people. However, the extent of these changes will vary considerably. Yemen will still have a relatively young population, with 37% of its people under 14 years old. The working-age group will increase to 57.3%, while the over-60 group will grow to 5.7%. Italy, on the other hand, will have a very old population, with only 22.2% of its people under 14 years old. The working-age group will decrease to 40.3%, while the over-60 group will skyrocket to 37.6%.

These demographic trends have important implications for the social and economic development of both countries. Yemen will need to invest more in education, health care, and job creation for its growing population, while Italy will face the challenges of providing adequate pensions, health care, and social services for its aging population.

The four pie charts illustrate the percentage of people in different age groups in Yemen and Italy in the years 2000 and 2050. The main feature of the charts is that both countries will undergo a significant aging process in the next 50 years, but Italy will have a much older population than Yemen.

In 2000, Yemen’s population was predominantly young, with 50% of its people in the under-14 age group. The middle-aged group (15-59) accounted for 46.3% of the population, while the elderly group (over 60) was the smallest at 3.6%. Italy’s population, however, was much more balanced, with 24.1% of its people in the under-14 age group, 61.6% in the middle-aged group, and 14.4% in the elderly group.

By 2050, both countries will witness a dramatic shift in their age structure. Yemen’s population will still be relatively young, but the under-14 age group will decrease to 37% of the total. The middle-aged group will rise to 57.3%, while the elderly group will double to 5.7%. Italy’s population, meanwhile, will become extremely old, with the under-14 age group dropping to 22.2% of the total. The middle-aged group will shrink to 40.3%, while the elderly group will almost triple to 37.6%.

These demographic changes will have profound consequences for the future of both countries. Yemen will have to cope with the demands of a large and growing population, such as providing education, health care, and employment opportunities. Italy will have to deal with the problems of a shrinking and aging population, such as ensuring adequate pension, health care, and social support systems.
