The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Sample Answer 1
Band 8.5
The line graph illustrates the CO2 emissions in metric tonnes for four European countries (United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal) over a 40-year period from 1967 to 2007.
The United Kingdom exhibited a fluctuating trend in CO2 emissions. Starting at approximately 4 metric tonnes in 1967, it experienced a sharp increase to peak at nearly 11 metric tonnes in 1977. However, this was followed by a consistent decline over the next three decades to just above 4 metric tonnes in 2007.
Contrastingly, Sweden’s emissions were initially low at around one metric tonne but saw a steady rise until it plateaued at about six metric tonnes from 1987 onwards. Italy’s trend was somewhat similar but started at two metric tonnes and peaked slightly higher than Sweden’s.
Portugal had the most distinct pattern; beginning with negligible emissions, there was an exponential growth reaching its zenith of approximately five metric tonnes in the final year.
In summary, while the UK managed to reduce its CO2 emissions significantly after an initial spike, Portugal’s emissions surged remarkably. Sweden and Italy experienced moderate increases but appeared to stabilize their emission levels towards the end of the period.

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Sample Answer 2
Band 8.5
The provided line graph delineates the progression of CO2 emissions measured in metric tonnes across four distinct nations - United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal - spanning from the year 1967 to 2007.
It is evident that each country followed a unique trajectory over this period. The United Kingdom commenced with mid-level emissions around four metric tonnes which escalated sharply peaking near eleven before plummeting consistently back to initial levels by end of this era. This dramatic reduction underscores significant environmental initiatives or industrial reductions during these years.
Sweden and Italy portrayed similar trends albeit with less severity; both nations commenced with lower emission levels which ascended steadily through decades stabilizing near six and seven respectively indicating perhaps more controlled industrial growth or early adoption of green technologies.
Portugal’s narrative is markedly different; initiating with almost zero emissions it witnessed an exponential surge climaxing near five by end of this period reflecting rapid industrialization or lack of stringent environmental controls during these years.
To encapsulate, this data underscores diverse national narratives reflecting varied approaches towards industrialization and environmental conservation efforts across these European nations over four decades.
