IELTS Writing Task 1

The bar chart compares the proportion of households in England and Wales that owned or rented their accommodation over a period of 93 years. It is clear that there was a dramatic change in the housing situation during this time, with a significant increase in home ownership and a corresponding decrease in rented accommodation.

In 1918, the vast majority of households (around 78%) were rented, while only a small fraction (about 23%) were owned. However, this trend began to reverse in the following decades, as more people started to buy their own houses. By 1971, the percentage of owned and rented households was almost equal, at around 50% each.

The gap between the two categories widened further in the next 30 years, as home ownership continued to rise and renting declined. In 2001, more than 70% of households were owned, while less than 30% were rented. This shows a significant shift in the housing market and the preferences of the people.
