IELTS Writing Task 1

The bar chart illustrates the volume of minutes (in billions) spent on three different types of calls—local-fixed line, national and international-fixed line, and mobiles (all calls)—from 1995 to 2002.

In the initial years from 1995 to 1997, there was a noticeable increase in the usage of local-fixed lines, peaking at approximately 90 billion minutes. However, this trend reversed as a gradual decline ensued from 1998 onwards. In contrast, national and international-fixed line calls remained relatively stable throughout the period with slight fluctuations.

Mobile call usage exhibited an interesting pattern. In its introductory phase (1995-1999), mobile call minutes were negligible but saw an exponential rise in the early millennium. By 2002, it nearly matched the volume of local-fixed line calls.

The data encapsulates a transformative period in telecommunication history where traditional fixed-line calls began to wane in popularity while mobile communication surged—a testament to technological advancements and changing consumer preferences.
