IELTS Writing Task 1

The bar graph compares the percentages of people who bought fresh coffee, purchased instant coffee, or visited a café for coffee or tea in the last four weeks in five Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart. The data is presented in three categories: bought fresh coffee, bought instant coffee, and went to a café.

Overall, it is evident that Melbourne had the highest rates of fresh coffee purchases and café visits, while Hobart had the lowest rates in all three categories. Sydney and Melbourne were the only cities where more than half of the residents bought fresh coffee, while instant coffee purchases were more consistent across all cities except Hobart. Café visits were more popular in Sydney and Melbourne than in the other three cities.

In detail, Sydney and Melbourne had similar patterns of coffee and tea consumption, with both cities having over 60% of people buying fresh coffee and around 65% of people going to a café in the last four weeks. However, Melbourne had a slightly higher percentage of café visits (69%) than Sydney (61%). Both cities also had similar rates of instant coffee purchases, with Sydney at 38% and Melbourne at 37%.

Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart had lower percentages of people buying fresh coffee and going to a café than Sydney and Melbourne. Brisbane had 42% of people buying fresh coffee and 48% of people going to a café, while Adelaide had 39% and 46%, respectively. Hobart had the lowest rates in both categories, with only 35% of people buying fresh coffee and 41% of people going to a café.

Instant coffee purchases were more evenly distributed across the five cities, with Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart having similar percentages of around 33%. However, Hobart had a noticeably lower rate of instant coffee purchases (28%) than the other four cities, which ranged from 37% to 38%.

Overall, the graph reveals that Melbourne was the most active city in terms of coffee and tea consumption, while Hobart was the least active. Café visits were also more common in Sydney and Melbourne than in the other three cities.
