IELTS Writing Task 1

The bar graphs provided illustrate the distribution of UK graduates and postgraduates (excluding those in full-time work) across various activities in 2008. The activities are part-time work, voluntary work, further study, and unemployment. The number of students in each category is given in thousands.

The most striking feature of the graphs is that further study was the most common activity for both graduates and postgraduates, with 29.7 thousand and 2.7 thousand respectively. This was followed by part-time work, which involved 17.7 thousand graduates and 2.5 thousand postgraduates.

Unemployment was the third most prevalent activity, affecting 16.2 thousand graduates and 1.6 thousand postgraduates. Voluntary work was the least popular activity, with only 3.5 thousand graduates and 0.3 thousand postgraduates participating in it.

Overall, the graphs show that UK graduates and postgraduates in 2008 were more likely to pursue further education or part-time employment than to be unemployed or engaged in voluntary work. The graphs also reveal that the number of graduates was much higher than the number of postgraduates in each activity.

It is clear from the graphs that further study was the most preferred activity for both graduates and postgraduates, with nearly 30 thousand graduates and almost 3 thousand postgraduates choosing this option. Part-time work was the second most popular activity, with around 18 thousand graduates and 2.5 thousand postgraduates involved in it. Unemployment was the next most common activity, with over 16 thousand graduates and 1.6 thousand postgraduates affected by it. Voluntary work was the least favoured activity, with only 3.5 thousand graduates and 0.3 thousand postgraduates taking part in it.

In summary, the graphs indicate that UK graduates and postgraduates in 2008 tended to continue their education or find part-time jobs rather than to be unemployed or do voluntary work. The graphs also show that the number of graduates was significantly higher than the number of postgraduates in each activity.
