IELTS Writing Task 1

The bar chart compares the frequency of eating at fast food restaurants among people in the USA in three different years: 2003, 2006 and 2013. It shows seven categories of frequency, ranging from every day to never.

Overall, it is clear that there was a significant decrease in the proportion of people who ate at fast food restaurants several times a week over the 10-year period, while there was a marked increase in those who never ate at such places. The other categories showed minor fluctuations, with no clear pattern.

In 2003, more than a third of the population (35%) ate at fast food restaurants several times a week, making it the most common category. However, by 2013, this figure had dropped dramatically to just over 20%, and was overtaken by the category of once or twice a month, which rose from 9% to 25%. The percentage of people who never ate at fast food outlets also increased considerably, from 4% to 15%.

The remaining categories showed less significant changes. The proportion of people who ate at fast food restaurants every day remained stable at around 5%, while those who ate once a week increased slightly from 9% to 14%. The categories of a few times a year and less than once a year both declined marginally, from 18% to 16% and 16% to 14% respectively.

The given bar chart illustrates how often people in the USA dined at fast food restaurants in 2003, 2006 and 2013. The frequency is divided into seven categories, from daily to never.

The main trend that can be observed is that the percentage of people who ate at fast food restaurants several times a week declined significantly over the decade, while those who never patronized such places rose sharply. The other categories showed minor variations, with no consistent trend.

In 2003, the most popular category was several times a week, with 35% of the population choosing this option. However, by 2013, this category had fallen drastically to 21%, and was surpassed by the category of once or twice a month, which increased from 9% to 25%. The proportion of people who never ate at fast food joints also grew considerably, from 4% to 15%.

The rest of the categories showed less noticeable changes. The percentage of people who ate at fast food restaurants every day stayed constant at around 5%, while those who ate once a week rose slightly from 9% to 14%. The categories of a few times a year and less than once a year both decreased slightly, from 18% to 16% and 16% to 14% respectively.
