The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
Sample Answer 1
Band 8.5
The line graph compares the amount of goods carried by road, water, rail, and pipeline in the UK over a period of 28 years. It is clear that road transport was the most popular mode throughout the time frame, while pipeline transport saw the most significant growth.
In 1974, about 40 million tonnes of goods were transported by road, which was slightly more than the amount carried by water. Both modes increased steadily until 2002, when road transport reached nearly 100 million tonnes and water transport peaked at 60 million tonnes.
Rail transport, on the other hand, declined sharply from 40 million tonnes in 1974 to less than 20 million tonnes in the late 1980s, before recovering slightly to 30 million tonnes in 2002. Pipeline transport remained negligible until the mid-1990s, when it rose rapidly to almost 20 million tonnes by the end of the period.
To sum up, the graph shows that road and water transport dominated the UK goods transportation market from 1974 to 2002, while rail transport lost its popularity and pipeline transport emerged as a new option.

The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
Sample Answer 2
Band 8.5
The graph illustrates the trends in the quantity of goods transported by four different modes - road, water, rail, and pipeline - in the UK between 1974 and 2002. The main features of the graph are the dominance of road transport, the decline of rail transport, and the rise of pipeline transport.
According to the graph, road transport was the most preferred mode of goods transportation in the UK throughout the 28-year period, increasing steadily from 40 million tonnes in 1974 to almost 100 million tonnes in 2002. Water transport was the second most common mode in 1974, with 40 million tonnes, but it experienced a slight drop until the mid-1980s, before stabilizing at around 60 million tonnes. Rail transport, however, showed a different pattern, as it decreased dramatically from nearly 40 million tonnes in 1974 to below 20 million tonnes in the late 1980s, and then recovered marginally to 30 million tonnes in 2002. Pipeline transport was the least used mode for most of the period, with negligible amounts until the mid-1990s, when it surged to nearly 20 million tonnes by 2002.
In summary, the graph reveals that road and water transport were the main modes of goods transportation in the UK from 1974 to 2002, while rail transport suffered a significant loss and pipeline transport witnessed a remarkable growth.
